Duloxetine is used in adults to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, uncontrolled leakage of urine (stress urinary incontinence), diabetic neuropathic pain (pain associated with nerve damage), fibromyalgia (chronic pain) and chronic muscle or joint pain such as osteoarthritis.
How it works
Duloxetine belongs to a class of drugs called as selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). It increases the levels of chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain that usually decrease in diseases like depression.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Adults (over 18 years): 30-60 mg once daily.
Common side effects
Nausea, dry mouth, headache, feeling sleepy,vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, gas, sweating, skin rashes, muscle pain and spasms, little or no urination, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, increased blood pressure, weight loss, (inability to sleep, agitation, anxiety, unusual dreams, dizziness, lethargy, tremors, problems in vision, ringing in the ears, suicidal thoughts, sudden involuntary jerks or twitches of the muscles, restlessness, abnormal menstrual or vaginal bleeding, chest pain, weight gain.
Who should not take
Duloxetine should not be given to children under the age of 18 years. Duloxetine should not be taken:
If you are allergic to it.
If you have liver or kidney disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
If you are taking medicines like MAOIs (eg. selegiline), fluvoxamine, ciprofloxacin, enoxacin or the anti-coagulant warfarin.
