Chloramphenicol(500 Mg)
Uses
Chloramphenicol is used to treat severe life-threatening infections, particularly those caused by Haemophilus influenzae and typhoid fever. It is also used to treat certain eye infections. It is also used in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections of the outer ear.
How it works
Chloramphenicol is a potent broad spectrum antibiotic which has activity against many types of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by killing or slowing the growth of sensitive bacteria.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and durationDosage: Capsules, tablets: 250 and 500 mg; Syrup: 125mg/5 ml:
Adult: 50 mg/kg body weight in four divided doses (can be doubled in very severe infections, septicemia, meningitis, reduce as soon as clinically indicated).
Child: Haemophilus epiglotitis and pyrogenic meningitis: 50 to 100 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses.
For eye infections: ointment (1%w/w); drops (1%w/v, 0.5% w/v); suspension 125 mg/5 ml:
Adults, children aged 2 years and over and the elderly.
If using eye drops, one drop to be instilled into the infected eye every two hours for the first 48 hours, and then every 4 hours thereafter.
If using eye ointment, apply about 1 cm of ointment to the affected eye(s) 3 to 4 times a day.
If using chloramphenicol eye drops during the day and the eye ointment at night - apply the ointment at night, preferably at bed time.
For ear infections: ear drops (5% w/v, 10% w/v BP)
Three to four drops should be applied into the affected ear up to two to three times daily for up to one week.
Common side effects
Mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache; fever; chills; or sore throat; dry mouth; dark urine; inflamed and sore mouth, inflammation of the tongue, confusion; depression; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness; vision changes, pain; redness; or swelling at the injection site. Severe allergic reactions, hypersensitivity reactions including, rashes, fever, swelling of eyes and skin (angioedema) and rarely, severe, whole-body allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
