Uses
Terbinafine is used to treat fungal infections affecting fingernails, toenails and skin.
How it works
Terbinafine is an antifungal drug. It stops growth of fungi by inhibiting an important enzyme that results in reduced formation of ergosterol, a vital component of the outer protective layer of fungi which is essential for fungal growth.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Fungal infections of fingernail:
Adult and elderly dose for oral tablets: One 250 mg tablet daily for 2-12 weeks.
Creams/ointments: Apply on the affected area once or twice a day for up to 2 weeks.
Common side effects
Very common: pain and stiffness in muscles, bone or joints (arthralgia, myalgia); non-serious form of skin reactions, pale, red, raised, itchy skin rashes (utricaria); loss of appetite; feeling of fullness, enlargement of belly, indigestion, urge to vomit (nausea), abdominal pain, loose motions (diarrhea). Local symptoms such as itching, swelling, redness, scaling, peeling, burning and irritation if skin at application site and application site pain may occur upon application of terbinafine creams or ointments.
Who should not take
Do not take or use terbinafine if you are allergic to terbinafine or any other ingredients in the medicine.
Terbinafine is not recommended for use in individuals with liver disease or with kidney impairment.
Terbinafine is not recommended for use in children.
