Uses
Isotretinoin is used to treat severe acne, which has not responded to other treatments including antibiotics.
How it works
Isotretinoin belongs to a class of medication called retinoids (forms of vitamin A). It works by decreasing the amount of oil secreted by oil glands thus helping the skin to renew quickly.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Severe acne and other skin conditions:
Adults, adolescents and elderly: Oral dose of 0.5-1 mg/kg/day in two divided doses, up to a maximum of 2 mg/kg/day. Gel 0.05% to be applied sparingly over affected areas twice daily.
Children: not recommended.
Common side effects
Dryness of lips, mouth, nose and skin, cracking or peeling of skin, itching, rash, changes in finger and toe nails, joint or back pain, dizziness, drowsiness or nervousness, unusual change in mood or behaviour sleep problems, aggression, agitation, blurred vision, sudden headache or pain behind eyes, vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice, fast heart rate, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, black and bloody stools, blistering, bleeding, purple or red spots under the skin, increased susceptibility to infections, fever, chills, bone pain, fracture, flu symptoms, stiffness of joints.
Who should not take
Patients who are allergic to isotretinoin or any other ingredients of the tablet.
Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding.
Patients who have raised bad cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia) or disorders of pancreas.
Patients with vitamin A toxicity.
Patients who have scaling and itching of skin.
Children <12 years of age.
