Uses
Isosorbide dinitrate is used to prevent and treat angina pectoris (tight chest pain). It is used as an adjunctive treatment in severe acute or chronic congestive cardiac failure.
How it works
Isosorbide dinitrate belongs to a group of medicines called organic nitrates and works by widening the blood vessels in your heart to allow an increased amount of blood to flow to areas which need it.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration. The dosage and duration in adults are as follows:
For the prophylaxis and treatment of angina pectoris:
One tablet (20 mg) twice a day or if dose increased to one tablet three times a day
As an adjunctive treatment in the management of severe acute or chronic congestive cardiac failure.
Doses of 40-160 mg, daily in divided doses (maximum daily dose should not exceed 240 mg).
Children: Not recommended
Common side effects
Swelling of the face or throat, causing, difficulty in breathing or wheezing, fainting or collapse, swelling or blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), mild headaches,dizziness, tiredness, feeling weak, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes or flushing,excessive sweating, restlessness, worse angina, heartburn, red or scaly skin.
Who should not take
Do not take isosorbide dinitrate if:
You are allergic to isosorbide dinitrate, other nitrates or any of the other ingredients.
You suffer from anemia (reduction in red blood cells).
You have had a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
You have had a brain hemorrhage (bleeding) or head injury (trauma).
You have a low blood volume (hypovolemia) or very low blood pressure.
Your blood has stopped circulating around your body properly (circulatory failure).
