Uses
Isosorbide mononitrate is used in adults to prevent angina (chest pain).
How it works
Isosorbide mononitrate belongs to a group of medicines called organic nitrates that works by widening the blood vessels in heart to allow an increased amount of blood to flow to areas which need it.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration. The dosage and duration for the prophylaxis of angina pectoris in adults: One or two tablets (dose range 25 to 120mg) in a day, preferably in the morning.
Common side effects
Headaches (usually at the start of treatment), feeling dizzy; low blood pressure when standing up, slow or fast heart beat; flushing; restlessness; looking pale; weakness; tiredness; cold perspiration; dizziness, tiredness, feeling weak,rash and itching; pain in your muscles or joints; drowsiness; nausea, diarrhea; sensitivity to light; fainting or collapse; low levels of oxygen in the blood; bleeding in the brain; worsening angina, red or scaly skin.
Who should not take
Do not take isosorbide mononitrate:
If you are allergic to isosorbide mononitrate or any of the other ingredients.
If you have been diagnosed with any of the severe heart disease.
If you suffer from severe anemia (low levels of red blood cells in the blood) or low volume of blood in your body (hypovolaemia).
If you have a head injury or bleeding of the brain.
If you have closed-angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes).
If you have very low blood pressure.
If your blood has stopped circulating around your body properly (circulatory failure) or have decreased blood supply to the brain (cerebrovascular insufficiency).
