Uses
Tetracycline is used in the treatment of respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted disease, eye infection, skin infection, rickettsial infection (infection caused by organism called as rickettsia) and as an alternative drug in treatment of leptospirosis (an infectious bacterial disease occurring in rodents, dogs, and other mammals, which can be transmitted to humans), brucellosis (headache, sickness, fever, swollen lymph nodes), psittacosis (headache, nose bleeds, shivering and fever), plague (painful swelling of the lymph nodes), cholera (severe sickness and diarrhoea), gas-gangrene (is a bacterial infection that produces gas in tissues in necrosed tissues) and tetanus (a serious bacterial disease that affects nervous system, leading to painful muscle contractions, particularly of jaw and neck muscles).
How it works
Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that belongs to class of drugs called tetracyclines. It acts by inhibiting the growth and multiplication of bacteria by interfering in their protein synthesis mechanism.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Adults: 250 mg every 6 hourly, increase to 500 mg every 6 to 8 hours in severe infections.
Children: 25 to 50 mg/kg body weight, daily in three divided doses.
Common side effects
Superinfection causing soreness of tongue (glossitis), inflammation of mucous membrane of mouth, gut, allergic reactions, inflammation of the covering of the heart called pericardium (pericarditis), systemic lupus erythematosus (a condition characterized by a rash especially on the face, hair loss, fever, malaise and joint pain), fixed drug eruptions, widespread scaling and peeling of skin associated with hair loss, itching and pain (exfoliative dermatitis), brown-black microscopic discoloration of thyroid tissue, headache, visual disturbances, permanent visual loss, benign intracranial hypertension (raised fluid pressure in head or brain cavity) in juveniles and adults with headache, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, inflammation of pancreas (pancreatitis), permanent tooth discoloration and enamel, hypoplasia in children, and adults, liver toxicity, sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity), itching of skin (pruritus), skin discoloration, increased muscle weakness in patients with myasthenia gravis(neuromuscular disease characterized by very weak muscles and unusual tiredness), raised blood urea, kidney dysfunction.
Who should not take
Patients who are allergic to tetracycline or to any of its ingredients.
Patients with severe kidney or liver problems.
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (a condition characterized by a rash (especially on the face, hair loss, fever, malaise and joint pain).
Children under 12 years old.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women.
