Gatifloxacin(200 Mg)
Uses
Gatifloxacin is used as a local treatment for bacterial eye infection (conjunctivitis) in adults and children older than 1 year of age.
How it works
Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic belongs to the group of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It inhibits bacterial reproduction by inhibiting protein formation, thereby killing the bacteria.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Treatment of eye infections: Eye drops up to 8 times a day for 2 days, followed by 2-4 times a day for 5 days.
Gatifloxacin is banned in India for systemic use in human by any route including oral and injectable. But its use as eye drop is not banned.
Common side effects
Common: Red, irritated, itchy, or teary eyes, blurred vision, eye pain, eye discharge, rash, hives, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and abnormal change in voice (hoarseness).
Uncommon: Unpleasant taste, headache, dry eyes, broken blood vessels in the eyes, and swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, or ankles, or lower legs.
Who should not take
Do not take gatifloxacin eye drop, if you are allergic to it, other quinolones antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin), or benzalkonium chloride.
