Topiramate belongs to a class of medicines known as anti-epileptic drugs. It decreases the abnormal and excessive electrical signals in the brain that cause seizures or fits.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Oral dose: Start with 0.5 - 1 mg/kg/day (two divided doses); then can increase up to 24 mg/kg/day.
For prevention of migraine headache: 100 mg/day.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, inflammation of nose and throat, weight loss, dizziness and sleepiness, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain, dry mouth, stomach discomfort, gastritis, constipation, vertigo (spinning sensation), ringing in the ears, ear pain, difficulty in paying attention, loss of memory, confusion, lack of concentration, loss of balance, lethargy, tremors (shaking), sedation, mood swings, agitation, irritability, insomnia (sleeplessness), disturbances in vision, skin rashes, loss of hair, nasal congestion, cough, muscle weakness and pain.
Who should not take
Patients who are allergic to it or to any ingredient in the medicine.
Patients who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding an infant.
Patients who are taking birth control pills.
