Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia (psychiatric disorder with symptoms of emotional instability, detachment from reality, often with delusions and hallucinations, and withdrawal into the self) and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorders.
How it works
Risperidone belongs to class of medicines called atypical antipsychotics. It works by altering the effects of chemicals present in the brain, thereby relieving the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Schizophrenia in adults: 2 mg per day; dose will be increased in increments of 1 to 2 mg per day; target dose: 4 to 8 mg per day. Maximum dose: 16 mg per day.
Schizophrenia in children: 0.5 mg per day; dose will be increased in increments of 0.5 mg to 1 mg per day; target dose: 3 mg per day. Maximum dose: 6 mg per day.
Bipolar disorder in adults: 2 to 3 mg once a day; dose will be increased in increments of 1 mg per day; Target dose: 1 to 6 mg per day. Maximum dose: 6 mg per day.
Bipolar disorder in children: 0.5 mg once a day; dose will be increased in increments of 0.5 mg to 1 mg per day; Target dose: 1 to 2.5 mg per day. Maximum dose: 6 mg per day.
Common side effects
Unable to sleep, sleepiness, movement disorders, headache, lung infection, inflammation of the air passages (bronchitis), inflammation of the air-cavities around nose (sinusitis), urinary tract infection, ear infection, flu, high prolactin levels in the blood (hyperprolactinemia), increase in weight, increased appetite, decreased appetite, sleep disorder, agitation, depression, anxiety, uncontrolled shaking (tremor), blurred vision, irritation and redness in the membrane covering the eye (conjunctivitis), increased heart rate (tachycardia), hypertension, breathlessness (dyspnea), pain in the pharynx and larynx, cough, nosebleeds (epistaxis), nasal congestion, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion (dyspepsia), dry mouth, toothache, rash, redness of skin, muscle pain or stiffness, back pain, urinary incontinence, swelling (edema), fever, chest pain, weakness, fatigue, pain, fall.
Who should not take
Patients who are allergic to risperidone or any of its ingredients.
