Eszopiclone is a hypnotic that belongs to a class of drugs called cyclopyrrolones. The exact mechanism of action is not known but its effect is believed to result from the increase of certain natural chemicals in the brain that induce sleep.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Adults: 1-3 mg before bedtime.
Elderly/debilitated patients: 1-2 mg before bedtime.
Common side effects
Dizziness, impaired vision, difficulty speaking, daytime anxiety and/or restlessness, mood or mental changes, headache, sleepiness (somnolence), chest pain, respiratory infection, heartburn, increased appetite, unpleasant taste, dryness of mouth, nausea, indigestion, stomach upset, constipation, decreased muscle tone, weight loss. In elderly: loss of appetite, confusion, clumsiness or unsteadiness and difficulty with coordination.
Who should not take
Patients allergic to eszopiclone or any of its ingredients.
Children <18 years.
Patients taking medicines that can induce sleep like antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine), medicines for mental or mood disorders (e.g. haloperidol, thioridazine), or medicines for seizures (e.g. carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin).
