Uses
Divalproex is used to treat mood disorder (mania), fits (complex partial seizures) and headaches due to migraine.
How it works
Divalproex belongs to the group of medicines called anticonvulsants. It acts by reducing or preventing the number of seizures and by controlling the abnormal activity of nerve signals in the brain.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Treatment of fits (seizures):
In adults and children (> 10 years): Starting dose: 10 to 15 mg/kg daily, maintenance dose: below 60 mg/kg daily.
Treatment of mania:
In adults: Starting dose: 250 mg daily in divided doses, maintenance dose: according to clinical effect.
Treatment of headaches due to migraine:
In adults: Starting dose: 250 mg twice daily, maintenance dose: up to 1000 mg daily.
Common side effects
Nausea, sleepiness, dizziness, vomiting, weakness, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, loose motions, increased appetite, tremor, weight gain, back pain, hair loss, headache, fever, loss of appetite, constipation, double vision, reduced vision in one or both eyes, unsteady movements, involuntary, rapid and repetitive movement of the eyes, loss of memory, flu syndrome, infection, inflammation of the air passages, bruises, swelling unable to sleep, nervousness, depression, sore throat, breathlessness, ringing in ears, inflammation of stomach.
Who should not take
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to divalproex or any of the other ingredients of divalproex tablet.
If you have liver problems or a urea cycle disorder.
If you have a genetic liver problem caused by a mitochondrial disorder (e.g. Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome).
Children less than 2 years with a mitochondrial disorder.
Pregnant or breastfeeding woman.
