Secnidazole(1000 Mg)
Uses
Secnidazole is used to treat intestinal amoebiasis (infection of the intestinal), hepatic amoebiasis (infection of the liver), urethritis (infection of the urethra) and vaginitis (infection of the vagina) caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and giardiasis (parasitic infections).
How it works
Secnidazole is an antiinfective drug that belongs to a class of medicine called nitroimidazole. It works by inhibiting energy production of the disease/infection causing microorganism thereby killing them.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Acute intestinal amoebiasis and trichomoniasis: adult: 2000 mg as single dose; children: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.
Asymptomatic amoebiasis: adult: 2000 mg once daily , for 3 days; children: 30 mg/kg once daily, for 3 days.
Hepatic amoebiasis: Adult: 1500 mg/ day in single/ divided dose, for 5 days; children: 30 mg/kg/day in single/ divided dose, for 5 days.
Giardiasis: Adult: 2000 mg as single dose; children: 35-50 mg/kg/day in single/ divided dose, for 5 days.
Common side effects
Gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, epigastric pain (pain localized in the upper abdomen immediately below the ribs), metallic taste, glossitis (inflammation of the tongue) and stomatitis (inflammation of the stomach).
Who should not take
Patients allergic to secnidazole or any of its ingredients or any imidazole derivative.
Patients suffering blood dyscrasia (blood disorder).
