Cyproheptadine is used to treat sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose, and other symptoms of allergies.
How it works
Cyproheptadine belongs to the group of medicines called antihistamines and antiserotonergic. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration:
Treatment in adults: 4 to 20 mg 3 times daily and should not be more than 0.5 mg/kg daily.
Treatment in children (2-6 years): 2 mg 2-3 times daily and should not be more than 12 mg daily.
Treatment in children (7-14 years): 4 mg 2-3 times daily and should not be more than 16 mg daily.
Common side effects
Temporary sedation and sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, unable to sleep (insomnia), tingling, numbness, pricking, burning of skin, inflammation of nerves, fits, elation (euphoria), hallucinations, emotional disturbance (hysteria), rash, swelling (edema), excessive perspiration, pale red, raised, itchy skin rash, sensitivity to sunlight, acute labyrinthitis, blurred vision, sensation of spinning or rotation (vertigo), ringing in ears, low blood pressure, palpitations, increased heart rate (tachycardia), abnormal blood counts, liver problems, dryness of mouth, changes in appetite, nausea, vomiting, loose motions (diarrhea), constipation, difficult urination.
Who should not take
Patients who are allergic (hypersensitive) to cyproheptadine or any of the other ingredients of cyproheptadine tablet.
Patients who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy.
Patients with glaucoma.
Patients with peptic ulcer or bladder neck obstruction or pyloroduodenal obstruction.
Patients with prostatic hypertrophy.
Newborn and premature infants.
Elderly or debilitated patients.
Breastfeeding woman.
