Levetiracetam is used to treat certain type of seizures like partial onset seizures, tonic-clonic or myoclonic in people with epilepsy.
How it works
Levetiracetam belongs to a class of medication called anti-convulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitation of the brain.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Children (1 month to < 6 months): Immediate release tablet: 7-10 mg/kg/dose given twice daily; maximum dose increment up to 42 mg/kg/day.
Children (6 month to <4 years): Immediate release tablet: 10 mg/kg given twice daily; maximum dose increment up to 50 mg/kg/day.
Children (4 years to <16 years): Immediate release tablet: 10 mg/kg/dose given twice daily; maximum dose increment up to 60 mg/kg/day.
Children (>16 years): same as adult dose.
Adults: Immediate release tablet: 1000 mg daily; extended release: 500 mg twice daily; maximum dose increment up to 3000 mg/day.
Common side effects
Common: Feeling tired or irritable, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, infection, loss of appetite, stuffy nose, diarrhea, vomiting, anxiety, forgetfulness, constipation, agitation or hostility, unusual change in mood or behaviour, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, feeling weak or tired, problems with walking or movement, any skin rash, fever, sore throat, swelling in face or tongue, burning eyes, mouth sores, pain when swallowing, cold or flu symptoms, cough, trouble in breathing, Suicidal tendencies, hallucinations, different type of seizures.
Who should not take
It should not be taken by people who are allergic to levetiracetam or any other ingredients of the tablet.
Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast-feeding.
