Uses
Bortezomib is used to treat certain types of cancer such as multiple myeloma (a cancer of the cells of the immune system in the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a cancer of the cells of the immune system affecting the lymph nodes).
How it works
Bortezomib belongs to the class of drugs called proteasome inhibitors. Proteasomes are proteins which play an important role in growth and multiplication of cancer cells. Bortezomib blocks the action of proteasome, and reduces the growth of cancerous (actively growing) cells.
Common side effects
Anxiety, Disorientation, Fever, Light-headedness, Weight loss, Liver and kidney dysfunction, Low or high blood pressure, Chest pains or shortness of breath with exercise, Headache, Sweating, Vomiting, Shivering, Rash, Muscle/ bone pain, Blurred vision, Loss of appetite, Diarrhea, Stomach pain, Low red blood cells, Vertigo, Facial blushing, Depressed mood, Mouth ulcers, Itching, Dehydration, Numbness, Body swelling, Nausea, Pain in the hands or feet, Difficulty in sleeping, Tingling or burning sensation of the skin, Respiratory infections or fungal infections, Dryness and redness of the skin, Loss of taste, Constipation with or without bloating, Feeling weak, Unusual tiredness, Mood swings, Nose bleeds, Bleeding from bowels or stomach, Shingles, Sore or dry mouth, Low white blood cells, Loss of consciousness, Restlessness or agitation, Infection of the eye
