Uses
Methotrexate is used for the treatment of wide range of cancers of the breast, skin, head and neck or lung. It is also used to treat severe psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Methotrexate is usually given after other medications have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms.
How it works
Methotrexate belongs to a class of drugs known as antimetabolites. Methotrexate is referred to as a cytotoxic, most commonly used to stop the growth of cells in tumors. It acts by decreasing the activity of the immune system by blocking several enzymes involved in the immune system,and affects the growth of cancerous cells.
Common side effects
Sensitivity to light, Dizziness, Fever, Skin lesions, Eye irritation, Hair loss, Chills, Tiredness, Pain or difficulty in passing urine, Stomach pains, Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eye, Blurred vision, Loss of appetite, Loss of coordination, Diarrhea, Mood alteration, Headaches, Sore throat, Decreased sexual desire, Weakness and inability to move one side of the body or the whole body, But they can be very serious:stevens johnson syndrome, Decreased absorption from intestines, Joint and muscle pain, Damaged skin becomes inflamed on re-exposure to radiation and sunlight in psoriasis patients, Metabolic changes, Skin ulcers and erosions of inflamed areas, Blood in the urine, Inflamed blood vessels, Pain or difficulty breathing, General feeling of illness, Boils, Fits, Urge to vomit slow thought process, Raised liver enzymes, Loss of ability to speak or understand speech, Flaking skin, Weakening or softening of bones, Red spots on the skin, Low levels of white and red blood cells and cells that clot blood, Frequent urination, Vaginal ulcers, Infertility, Ankles or feet, Abnormal red blood cell function, Reduced resistance to infection, Swelling of the hands, Irritation or swelling of the vaginal tissues, May encourage the development of diabetes, Pimples, Severe allergic reaction .other side effects: drowsiness, Persistent cough, Black or tarry stools
