Olmesartan(20 Mg)
Uses
Olmesartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), prevention and treatment of heart attack (Myocardial Infarction) and heart failure; when heart is unable to pump sufficient blood. It is also used in patients of diabetes with kidney failure.
How it works
Olmesartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor inhibitors. Angiotensin II is a chemical that causes muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract, thereby narrowing the blood vessels. Olmesartan blocks the action of angiotensin II resulting in relaxation of blood vessels, and thus, reduces blood pressure.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Treatment of hypertension in adults: 10 mg once daily or up to 20 or 40 mg once daily when blood pressure is not adequately controlled at 10 mg dose.
Treatment of heart attack and heart failure is similar to that for hypertension.
Common side effects
Nausea headache, dizziness, unusual tiredness, cough, sore throat, flu like symptoms, pain or swelling of joints, diarrhea, indigestion, pain in abdomen, back bone, and/or chest, swelling in the hands or legs (peripheral edema), blood in the urine, increase in blood urea or creatine phosphokinase, increase in liver enzymes, increased level of triglycerides in blood, abnormally high levels of uric acid in blood, urinary tract infection, vomiting, sensation of spinning or rotation (vertigo); feeling of discomfort (malaise), sensation of pressure, serious allergic reaction.
Who should not take
Olmesartan is not recommended for children and adolescents under the age of 18.
Do not take olmesartan, if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients; if you are more than 3 months pregnant; if you suffer from jaundice; or have problems with drainage of bile from gallbladder (e.g., gallstones).Amlodipine(5 Mg)
Uses
Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and severe pain in chest.
How it works
Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blocker. It reduces the amount of calcium that enters the smooth muscles of the blood vessels and heart. As muscle cells require calcium to contract, reducing the flow of calcium causes the muscle cells to relax and blood vessels to dilate, reducing blood pressure, force and rate of the heartbeat. It improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscles.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.Treatment of hypertension or angina:
Adults: 5 mg or 10 mg once daily.
Children aged 6-17 years: 2.5 mg once daily or increased to 5 mg once daily if deemed necessary by the doctor.
Common side effects
Headache, sleepiness, dizziness, chest discomfort, facial redness and flushing, abdominal pain, indigestion, swelling of part or whole of body, unusual tiredness, rash, nausea, swelling of ankle, face, lips and eyes, hypersensitivity reactions.
Who should not take
Patients with known sensitivity to it or to its ingredients.
Breast feeding mothers should not take amlodipine.
