Chlordiazepoxide(25 Mg)
Uses
Chlordiazepoxide is used for the short-term (2-4 weeks only) treatment of severe anxiety which may occur alone or in association with sleeping problems (insomnia) or personality/behavioral disorders. It may also be used to treat muscle spasms, and to relieve alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
How it works
Chlordiazepoxide belongs to a group of medicines known as benzodiazepines. It works by enhancing the action of a signaling chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This results in a calming effect on the nerves and helps to reduce nervous tension (anxiety) and muscle spasm.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding dosage, duration and frequency of use.
Adults: 10-30 mg per day. The maximum dose is 100 mg per day, taken in divided doses daily.
Elderly and/or debilitated patients Dosage should not exceed half the adult dose.
Children:Not recommended in children below 18 years of age.
Above doses are provided for chlordiazepoxide capsules available in 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. It is also available as film coated tablet; the dose of chlordiazepoxide tablet is the same as capsule.
Common side effects
Light headedness and drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, unsteadiness (ataxia) and clumsiness, poor muscle coordination, confusion, speech disorder, and walking difficulties, numbed emotions, reduced alertness, unusual tiredness, headache, muscle weakness, vertigo, low blood pressure, stomach upsets, skin rashes,blurred vision, changes in sexual function, impotence, menstrual disorder, difficulty passing urine, inability to control urine or stools (incontinence), anemia, jaundice forgetfulness, memory loss, dependence, restlessness, depression, loss of memory (amnesia), agitation, irritability, aggressive outbursts, increased liver enzymes, changes in the way you walk.
Who should not take
Do not take chlordiazepoxide:
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzodiazepines or to any of the other ingredients
If you have respiratory depression, or your breathing stops when you are asleep (sleep apnea).
If you have depression or anxiety with depression.
In phobic and obsessional states.
In chronic psychosis.
In severe liver insufficiency (may precipitate encephalopathy).
In myasthenia gravis (neuromuscular disease characterized by very weak muscles and unusual tiredness after use).
Not advice to use chlordiazepoxide for children.
