Bromhexine mainly used to help relieve breathing problems caused due to inflammation of air passages (bronchitis) or inflammation of sinuses (sinusitis).
How it works
Bromhexine is capable of reducing the thickness of thick gel-like slippery substance (mucus) from the respiratory tract (mucolytic agent). It facilitates easy removal (by coughing out) of mucus from the respiratory tract by making it thin and less sticky.
Dosage
Bromhexine is available as an oral solution containing 4 mg of bromhexine per 5 ml of solution, or as an 8 mg tablet.
Adults and children 12 years and older: 1-2 tablets (8-16 mg) to be taken 3 times daily, up to a maximum of 48 mg daily; or 10 ml to be taken 3 times daily to a maximum of 15 ml to be taken 4 times daily.
Children 6-12 years old: 4 mg to be taken 3 times daily or 5 ml to be taken 4 times daily.
Children 2-5 years old: 5 ml twice daily (Tablet is not recommended).
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, pain in upper part of the abdomen, diarrhea, anaphylactic reactions which may manifest as sudden, widespread, potentially severe and life-threatening allergic reaction consisting of one or more of the following: rapid heart rate, fall in blood pressure, fainting, itchiness and flushing of skin, swelling of tissue under the skin, especially of lips and eyelids, coughing, sneezing, breathlessness, noisy respiration (wheezing).
Who should not take
