Nifedipine is used to treat high blood pressure and to control angina ( chest pain).
How it works
Nifedipine belongs to a category of drugs called as calcium channel blockers. It acts by widening the blood vessels to allow easy blood flow, which lowers the blood pressure and reduces chest pain.
Dosage
Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.
Hypertension:
Adults: 20 to 100 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses.
Common side effects
Flushing, headache, constipation, feeling of being unwell, swelling of ankles and legs, Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, stomach cramps, dry mouth, sleep disorders, anxiety, dizziness, migraine, restlessness, blurring of vision, trembling, low blood pressure when standing, irregular heartbeats, fainting, nose bleeds, nasal congestion, swelling in joints, muscle cramps, difficulty in urination, increased frequency of urination, inability to achieve or maintain an erection, increase in liver enzyme levels.
Who should not take
Do not take the drug:
If you are allergic to it or to any other content in the medicine.
If you have high blood pressure, chest pain, heart attack (within the last month), liver or kidney problems, other heart disorders, diabetes, blood disorders, swelling or breathlessness.
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
If you are taking rifampicin.
If you suffer from porphyria (a blood disorder).
If you have lactose-intolerance or Lapp lactase deficiency.
The medicine should not be given to children or patients less than 18 years of age.
